I begin my treatment sessions with an assessment to determine the current situation and identify your goals. Using systems of analysis from both Eastern and Western medical perspectives, I then develop an initial treatment plan specifically for you.
Clients often comment about my work as deep but gentle at that same time. I work to find the just the right amount of pressure to soften and release tissue without causing a spasm-pain response, using repetition and rhythm to reset neuromuscular signals between soft tissue and the nervous system.
My work is usually a combination of techniques, philosophies and strategies. I use my knowledge of the human anatomy and physiology to assess the condition of tissue and formulate appropriate treatments to address your area of complaint. Additionally, my understanding of Chinese medicine, Japanese Shiatsu, and Thai Traditional massage allows me to also address the systemic imbalances that are contributing to the condition.
You might think of it as a yin-yang approach - addressing both action and stillness, hardness and softness, structure and function.
Prior to my life as a massage therapist, I worked for over 15 years in social service programs addressing the intersections between justice, public health and community organizing. I have worked with diverse populations representing a wide range of gender and gender-expression, race, nationality, health status, class and education-level from around the world
I have worked in the US and parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America on issues including cancer, discrimination, HIV/AIDS and biomedical research. As a result I highly value principles of empowerment and self-determination, education and knowledge, justice and ethics, public and individual health and community building.
